Almost a century ago, a missionary party from the Anglican Church set out on a quest to explore the uncharted reaches of
Vancouver Island. Today, a small wooden church in Tofino celebrates the area hailed by these explorers as the most beautiful
spot on this island paradise.
A village on the western edge of North America, Tofino has been inhabited for over 2,000 years by aboriginal people who thrived
on fishing in the great ocean and harvesting the bounty of the temperate rain forest.
Tofino is a nature lover’s dream, a secluded haven on a peninsula just north of Long Beach. This hideaway may be unsurpassed
for marine activities: whale-watching, scuba diving, fishing, boating, and kayaking. The wildlife in Tofino is nothing short of
spectacular - killer whales, sea lions, otters, and countless birds of all species. On land, there are countless trails to hike and
miles of sandy beaches to explore. Soak in Hot Springs Cove where pools of hot mineral water bubble up from deep within the
earth to mingle with the crisp air and the gentle wash of the ocean.
Just south-east of Tofino lies the world-famous 77 kilometer trek from Bamfield to Port Renfrew, the West Coast Trail. This trek is the
ultimate test of endurance, and definitely not for the faint of heart. Endless convulsing streams, slippery trails and steep ladders
may have some visitors tempted to head back to the beach! Originally built in 1907 for shipwreck survivors, the trail rewards
courageous travelers with exceptional scenery and adventure.
